The presidential ambitions of Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul have polarised Turkey - but he is preparing to defy the secular establishment, including the army, again.

Abdullah Gul has powerful backing from the ruling AKPThe ruling Islamist-rooted AK Party has decided to renominate Mr Gul - and the party now argues that it has a strong mandate from Turkish voters to do so.
Nevertheless, secularist opposition to his bid remains strong.
In May millions of Turks demonstrated against the prospect of a president from the AKP. And the military warned it would intervene to protect the secular system if required.
But the AKP then went on to win almost one in every two votes in an early parliamentary election.
Mr Gul, 56, says he has cut his ties to political Islam and points to more than four years as foreign minister, working for democratic reform and Turkey's EU membership.
Turkey has maintained a strict separation of religion and politics since it became a republic in 1923.
Secularists dislike the fact that Mr Gul's wife wears the Islamic headscarf. If Mr Gul is elected president by parliament, his wife will be the first First Lady to wear it - even though it is unclear how this could be done inside the presidential palace as the headscarf is banned from state institutions.
The Turkish president has the right to veto laws and dissolve parliament. The president also appoints the prime minister and some key figures in the establishment.
International profile
Mr Gul is certainly an experienced politician.
He has steered Turkey's European Union accession talks since becoming foreign minister in 2003.
He also served as prime minister in late 2002 and early 2003, but was always a stop-gap for Mr Erdogan.
Mr Erdogan had a criminal conviction for reading an Islamist poem at a political rally and was barred from the 2002 election.
Mr Gul served to oversee changes to the constitution and, after a by-election, allowed Mr Erdogan back into parliament. Mr Gul quickly stepped aside.
However, Mr Gul is no stranger to the secular-religious controversy and some analysts say he is as close, if not closer, to his religious roots as Mr Erdogan.
Cyprus deadlock
Secularists fear that if the AKP controls both parliament and presidency it may push an "Islamic agenda".

Mr Gul has tried to sound conciliatory, with phrases such as "If I am elected I will act accordingly" and a pledge to adhere to secular principles.
On the headscarf issue, he stood by his support for them, but avoided being contentious, saying "these are individual preferences and everybody should respect them".
The issue of Cyprus has remained a constant thorn for Mr Gul.
During his brief stint as prime minister he pinpointed it as one of his key priorities. But four years later Cyprus remains a key stumbling block to Turkey's EU membership.
Last year, Mr Gul said Cyprus was "poisoning" Turkey's EU accession process.
Mr Gul has also criticised US policies in the Middle East, saying Washington's support for Israel in its conflict in Lebanon last year had caused a backlash in Turkey.
He said moderate Turks were in danger of becoming anti-American.
Other key issues on his agenda have been Syrian relations and Kurdish separatists.
Narrow defeat
Abdullah Gul was born in Kayseri on 10 October 1950.
He graduated in economics from Istanbul University in 1971 and received a PhD there in 1983. He also studied in the UK.
Mr Gul, an English and Arabic speaker, joined parliament in 1991 as a member of the Welfare Party.
In 1999, he was re-elected as a member of the Virtue Party, Welfare's successor, but in 2000 he narrowly lost a bid to replace Recai Kutan as Virtue's leader.
Mr Gul then became a founder member of the AKP in 2001.
He married Hayrunisa Ozyurt in 1980 and the couple have two sons and a daughter.

Abdullah Gul's candidacy causes continuing controversyTurkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul has confirmed he plans to stand again as a presidential candidate.
His previous presidential bid sparked huge protests in May because of his Islamist roots. Secular institutions, including the army, opposed him.
Mr Gul said his ruling AK Party, which won a convincing victory in elections last month, was backing his bid.
Opponents dislike the fact that Mr Gul's wife wears the Muslim headscarf, which is banned in state institutions.
The failure of his first presidential bid led to an early general election.

Mr Gul is meeting opposition party leaders in an attempt to gather support for his election bid.
Under parliamentary rules, candidates must put themselves forward before midnight on 19 August, with the first ballot scheduled for 20 August.
One of the main opposition parties, the MHP, has previously said it would not boycott the latest election, a move likely to ensure a quorum of two-thirds of MPs to make a valid vote.
Lingering opposition
Mr Gul's previous bid for the presidency failed because opposition parties boycotted the two votes in April and May.
In the first and second round of voting a candidate must win a two-thirds majority to be elected - 367 votes out of the total of 550 deputies.

AKP 341 seats
CHP 99 seats
MHP 70 seats
Kurdish MPs (DTP) 22 seats
Democratic Left Party 13 seats
Independents 4 seats
Total 550 seats
The AKP does not have 367 deputies sitting in parliament.
But in the third and fourth round only an absolute majority of 276 is required.
The governing party has 341 MPs, so the AKP's candidate would be highly likely to win any contest in a third or fourth round.
The largest opposition party, the secular centre-left Republican People's Party (CHP), has stated its continued opposition to Mr Gul's candidacy.
"Gul is a conscious member of an ideological circle," CHP leader Deniz Baykal told CNN Turk television.
"Turkey would become a country in which the political balances were changing very fast, in which the Middle East identity would become more pronounced."

'Hundreds dead' in N Korea floods

The flooding follows days of torrential rain in North KoreaFlooding caused by heavy rain has left hundreds of people dead or missing in North Korea, state media has reported.
The rain had flooded tens of thousands of hectares of farmland and destroyed more than 30,000 homes, official news agency KCNA said.
Worst hit was Kangwon province, where 20,000 homes were damaged, KCNA said.
North Korea was devastated by seasonal floods in August last year. Hundreds of people are thought to have died, although exact figures are not known.
Both South Korea and the World Food Programme (WFP) sent aid in the wake of the disaster.
Michael Dunford of the WFP in Pyongyang said that a team was going to assess the damage, while South Korea was looking into sending aid, Deputy Unification Minister Seo Sung-woo in Seoul said.
'Unceasing rain'
Storms since 7 August had led to "huge human and material damage", KCNA said.

According to preliminary information from around the country, "the torrential rain left hundreds of persons dead or missing and destroyed more than 30,000 houses for over 63,300 families", it said.
At least 800 public buildings, more than 540 bridges and sections of railway were reportedly destroyed by the rain.
"This unceasing heavy rain destroyed the nation's major railways, roads and bridges, suspended power supply and cut off the communications network," the agency said.
As well as Kangwon, North Hwanghae and South Hamgyong provinces were also badly affected.
North Korea is secretive about releasing full details of accidents or natural disasters, making any confirmation of the extent of the flooding difficult.
But North Korean officials told the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies that 200 people were dead or missing, acting delegation head Terje Lysholm told the Associated Press news agency.
'Long-term concern'
Experts believe that deforestation has made seasonal flooding in North Korea worse.
Farmers have extended arable land into hills and forests in order to grow more food, removing the foliage that prevents erosion and landslides.
North Korea does not produce enough food to feed its population and is reliant on foreign food aid.
Mr Dunford said that the floods could constitute an extensive disaster for North Korea.
"This is something that will evolve throughout the rest of the growing season, determining exactly how much of the crop and the harvest has been lost," he told the BBC.
"But certainly North Korea is a food insecure country, it produces less food than required, so to lose any of the harvest will be a long-term concern for the North Korean authorities and for the World Food Programme."
About two million people are thought to have died from famine in the mid-1990s in North Korea.

Gunmen seize Nigerian MP's mother

Delta militants have carried out a series of attacks and abductionsUnknown gunmen have kidnapped the mother of a local MP in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta, authorities say.
The woman was abducted on Monday night from her home in Brass, a coastal village in Bayelsa, one of Nigeria's main oil-producing states.
Meanwhile, the 11-year-old son of another member Bayelsa State House of Assembly has been freed.
It is not clear whether any ransom was paid for the boy's release. Such payments are always officially denied.
The elderly mother of the speaker of the same local state legislature was freed four days earlier after 10 days in captivity.
Toddlers
These latest kidnappings are a new trend in the region where militants used to kidnap mostly foreign oil workers for ransoms.
In the neighbouring Rivers state, two toddlers were kidnapped last month in Port Harcourt.
A three-year-old daughter of a British worker was kidnapped and later released.
Another two-year-old son of a local chief was also snatched on his way to school in Nigeria's violent oil capital, Port Harcourt and later released to his father.
Foreign oil workers are still being targeted, with at least five still in captivity.
Over 200 expatriate workers have been kidnapped since early 2006 when militant groups stepped up their violent campaign for Niger Delta residents to have a larger share of Nigeria's oil money.
Hostages are normally released unharmed after ransom payments that are often denied by governments and the oil companies involved.

The SNP is marking 100 days in power at the Scottish ParliamentThe Scottish National Party has called for a "national conversation" to take place about independence.
It comes as the SNP executive prepares to publish its White Paper on independence this week - containing plans for a referendum on the issue.
Labour said the proposals were an unwanted waste of taxpayers' money.
A newspaper poll on Friday showed a significant drop in support for independence, despite more people backing the SNP.
The YouGov poll in the Daily Mail showed that while almost half of those questioned backed the Nationalists, the survey showed only 31% were in favour of independence.

A spokesman for First Minister Alex Salmond said the SNP were taking a three-pronged approach to government, focusing on competence, consensus and their vision for the country.
SNP leaders argued their handling of incidents such as the terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport showed they were governing effectively.
They also claimed cross-party support for matters such as the abolition of bridge tolls showed the administration was building consensus on an issue-by-issue basis.
The spokesman said: "The SNP are pursuing a three-fold approach to government - competence in running the nation's affairs, a consensus to move Scotland forward on particular issues, and offering an overall vision of the country's future. That is the context for the White Paper publication."

He continued: "The document will form the basis of a national conversation with the people, and will set out a vision of independence and responsibility in the modern world.
"It will be an inclusive, governmental document - making clear that ministers believe independence and equality offers the best future for Scotland, while urging those who believe in other possibilities, such as more powers, to come into the conversation."
A draft version of the referendum question was made public by the SNP in March.
It was set out to ask voters if they wanted to negotiate a new settlement with the UK Government so that Scotland could become a sovereign and independent state.
But Labour leader Jack McConnell said it was wrong for the SNP to propose a referendum on a question "we all know the answer to" after the May Holyrood election, where the Nationalists emerged the largest party by one seat.
Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats oppose independence, while the Tories and Lib Dems support moves to increase the parliament's powers to varying degrees.
The Green Party support the SNP's moves towards independence, meaning an estimated 50 of Holyrood's 129 MSPs are in favour.
Mr McConnell said: "A clear majority voted against independence parties in that election because devolution in the UK is better for Scotland and most Scots know that.
"The new first minister should accept the will of the people and concentrate on the people's priorities."
